Key Takeaways

Your VIN Is a 17-Character Code That Never Contains the Letters "I" or "O"
A Vehicle Identification Number is assigned at manufacturing and encodes your car's make, model, year, features, and history. If you think you see an "I" or "O," it's always a 1 or a 0.

Check Your Windshield, Door Jamb, Registration, or Title to Find It
The VIN appears at the bottom of your windshield, on the driver's side interior dashboard, in the driver's side door jamb, and on your registration and title documents. You can also scan the barcode with the GEICO mobile app.

To add a vehicle to your policy, you’ll need to provide information about it, such as the vehicle’s VIN.

What’s a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number is a unique code assigned to each vehicle when manufactured, and provides information about your specific vehicle, such as its Make, Model, and Year. It should look something like this: 4Y1SL65848Z411439.

Please read your VIN carefully! Did you know that VIN numbers never contain the letters "I" and "O"? If you think you see an "I" or an "O", it's just a one or a zero.

Where can I find the VIN?

You can find the VIN in several places on your vehicle or paperwork. For example:

  • At the bottom of your windshield
  • Driver's side interior dashboard
  • Driver's side door jamb
  • Vehicle registration
  • Title documents

You can scan the VIN barcode on your dashboard or doorjamb with the GEICO Mobile app, and we’ll enter your VIN for you!

Why do I need this?

Providing your VIN is important for several reasons. For one, it contains information about the features and history of your vehicle, which impacts the price of your coverage. This enables us to provide you with an accurate price quote for your vehicle. The use of collision avoidance systems, for example, may result in a discount in some states. In addition, sharing your VIN keeps you from getting fined by enabling us to keep your state's DMV or MVA informed of your coverage. It also helps you meet the requirements of your lienholder or finance company by demonstrating that your vehicle has the right coverage.

What if I don’t have a VIN?

No worries! You can still get a quote. Just select “I don’t know the VIN” and enter the year make and model. However, we’ll need to make some assumptions about the vehicle’s features and history, so the price we display may be subject to change once you enter a VIN later. Eventually you will need to provide your VIN before you can add your vehicle to your policy.
